Trail & District Arts Council and Blizzard Music Festival present country/alt-folk singer-songwriter Mariel Buckley. Unapologetically genuine, wry, and soft-hearted, Mariel Buckley aims to find herself squarely on the fringes: singing and writing songs for the underdog. Her candor and magnetic live shows have been charming listeners across North America since her debut LP, “Driving In The Dark” [2018]. With some impressive accolades on the way including Roots Artist of the Year (Western Canadian Music Awards, 2019), and taking home the grandprize of $100,000 from the year long Project Wild commercial radio artist contest.
Now, with her follow-up album “Everywhere I Used To Be” [2022], Buckley looks to turn country/folk music on its head. Delivered with Buckley’s signature crooning brand of angst-ridden alt-folk, anchored by the haunting whine of the pedal steel, and rounded out by heavy synth pads, the resulting collection is a driving, swooning, toe-tapping catharsis.Working with producer Marcus Paquin (The Weather Station, The Barr Brothers, Arcade Fire, TheNational), Buckley made an intentional move towards decidedly pop/contemporary production while leaving the space necessary for the songs to speak. Her mysterious ambiguity around genre, traditional storytelling, and identity is what gives these new songs such an honest shine. Buckley continues to be a trailblazer, with a firm grip on the steering wheel and a destination in mind - we’re just happy to be along for the ride.
“Buckley offers touchstones to anyone who has felt the same frustrations and feelings of being a misfit, letting them know they’re not alone and that they too can find themselves.” - Fatea Records
“Buckley’s been fine tuning her vision for years now, and she deserves to be talked about in the same breath as the artists who inspire her.” - Exclaim! Magazine.
Opening for Mariel Buckley is Liz Arnason. Liz Arnason is a self-confessed working-class Patsy Cline, but a bit more ethereal. By day, Arnason works in remote bush camps, and this nomadic existence and submergence into nature, inspire her music. Songs about being tired from work, the relentless passing of time, memories, and unconventional ways of living.
Mariel Buckley Duo will perform a 60-minute set at 8:45 pm. Liz Arnason will open at 7:45 pm.
Blizzard Music Festival runs annually during the last weekend of January. Mariel Buckley’s show is made possible thanks to funding from the BC Arts Council, BC Touring Council, the Government of Canada, and Tourism South Kootenay. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.
