The Trail and District Arts Council presents
Colour with Kirk: a Knitting Workshop
Monday, April 14th from 6pm to 9pm in Muriel Griffiths room, upstairs at The Bailey Theatre - 1501 Cedar Avenue, Trail BC.
Doors open at 5:30pm.
Duration: 3h
Fee: $20.00 per person.
Capacity: 12 people
Experience: Knitters should be able to knit and purl. Familiarity with fair isle and intarsia techniques would be an asset.
Workshop Description:
Enjoy a three-hour workshop with knitter Kirk Dunn, also known as The Knitting Pilgrim and creator of the Stitched Glass tapestries. Kirk will talk about the use of multiple colors in his knitting to create a tremendous range of depth, colour and texture, and share the simple techniques he uses to achieve advanced results. Participants will practice these techniques on a pincushion project and will leave the workshop with a functional and multi-hued miniature pillow in which to store their collection of darning needles and stitch holders.
Yarn & Equipment:
These patterns are considered to be ’stashbusters,’ so bring yarn from your own stash or choose colors from Kirk’s stash (at no extra charge). If you bring your own yarns, bring at least 3 balls of yarn in varying hues of each colour for a minimum of 9 balls (though the more you bring, the better). Fingering or light-weight gauge yarns work best. Variegated yarns are not suitable.
**** Please bring scissors and needles (size 3.5 mm to 2.0 mm [size 9 to 14]), straight or circular.
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Kirk Dunn is an actor, writer, and internationally renowned knitter, who is fascinated by the many ways in which knitting can bring people together and help them see eye to eye. He uses original, out-of-the-box knitting and his unique perspective to explore life today and in the past.
Kirk has been knitting since 1988. He began designing in 1996, and shares his appreciation for colour and complex design with world-renowned textile designers Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably, with whom he apprenticed in 1998 at the Kaffe Fassett Studio in London, England.
Kirk has been featured in Enroute Magazine, Family Circle Knitting, Vogue Knitting, The National Post newspaper, Maclean’s Magazine, The Presbyterian Record, Vogue’s Knit.1 magazine, the online knitting magazine Knitnet, and The Grid. He has been interviewed on CBC Radio's “This Morning” about knitting and acting. A documentary about his biggest project, Stitched Glass, called “The Threads of Abraham” has been made by filmmaker Todd Witham.
Kirk has been a guest speaker for several knitting guilds, and has given workshops at: the Textile Museum of Canada, https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.textilemuseum.ca/home&sa=D&source=docs&ust=1737582325673763&usg=AOvVaw3q9LMF0WAxltaIvmP3Fjt5
