Are you eager to be a part of a theatre work? Have you always been curious about how a dance piece is choreographed?

The Movement Lab is a 6-week intensive where you have the chance to soak in the theatre vibe and explore a choreographic process led by a world class dance artist -Sophie Barbarics.

This intensive aims to help participants to get a better understanding of contemporary dance, deepen their knowledge in the technique as well as learning new ways, textures and layers of movement possibilities.

Throughout the 6 weeks we will discover the possibilities of the human body. We will explore how the body can manifest itself into something more complex that has many different layers of interpretation. Discover movements that become a story that resonates with us. And reach Lélekbugi —the buzz that leaves your body when you’re connecting with your inner light through dance.

This intensive will be an exhilarating, boundless, joyful, free flow of ideas, in a non- judgemental space, that empowers you and makes you love your body and the movement it is capable of.

***There is a culminating class dance demonstration at the end of the project, with a pre-demo talk and a post-demo Q&A

***Please wear clothing that allows you to move freely and without restriction, and bring your water bottle

Secure your spot by registering and paying in advance - space is limited.

Building doors will open 15 minutes before the workshop.

About The Instructor:

Sophie Barbarics has travelled the world, connecting with people through dance for the last two decades. She has been working as an educator and choreographer in Europe, Asia and now Canada.

In her home country of Hungary she created more than a dozen shows for adults and kids, professionals and non professionals. She has collaborated with the Hungarian Dance University, Hungarian Opera, Operett Theatre, many dance and theatre schools. Her artistic thinking concentrates on the whole human body which existence is inseparable from the context he/she/they are living in. This means understanding each dancer as a unique creature with the potential of a beautiful story they carry in their bodies.

“In my pieces I dive deep into the spirit, pulling all the strings to find new pathways for interpretation of our inner world and I attempt to explore the possibilities of dance art having an impact on the world that surrounds us. Asking questions - without only trying to speak my opinion - gives my dancers the chance to express their thoughts about the theme. Sometimes these are not the biggest questions in life - as I strongly believe that making meaningful change begins with small steps - what seems unimportant at first sight - do I know how I walk? How do I pronounce love in my language? What is my body’s first response when I see pain?..etc.”

This workshop is made possible thanks to The Trail Arts Council, BC Arts Council and The Government of Canada. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.

Registraion fees are non-refundable.
